Love the Twitter video of you kid trying on this season's ski boots. We just went through the same pre-season hype ritual. Go Blue!

The Mt. Bohemia pass seems like a decent way to extend a standard Indy Pass if it fits your trip in ways that a Cooper wouldn’t. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, but, finding labor for minimal pay service jobs is hard enough these days, and add in the intense rise in housing values at most ski areas, east and west, therefore making a room for employees even more expensive, which I think is a much more serious problem, so, be careful what you hope for with the vaccine mandates. I predict ski areas closing or operating at reduced capacity because of labor shortages, much like when Hunter had to shut for a few days last winter when the patrol got sick.

Amazon just announced that they are paying 18-20 bucks an hour plus full tuition at colleges, as a way to compete in this labor market. As we know, or should know, restaurants are having a lot of trouble opening back up fully. Don't expect a whole bunch of people to work for nothing to operate a lift in the cold.

All fair points. Mt. Rose did add a minimum wage increase to $15/hour along with their vaccine requirement announcement.

I will say though, as an Amazon employee myself, the $18-$20 minimum wage unfortunately only applies to graveyard shift. Day shift, which is half of Amazon's hourly workforce (with less turnover), received no raises. :/

Mr. Winchester, your statements are inhuman and disgusting, advocating for vaccination mandates, of a brand new variety of vaccine no less. One's health decisions are one's business, no one else's. If you're concerned about catching a disease, perhaps you should focus on your own health first--are there any bad habits you could eliminate, for instance? There have been many cases of pericarditis and myocarditis in teenagers that have received the shot (this has been reported in many news outlets); should they be forced to get the vaccine if they want to ski? Despite your decent work with respect to the wonderful sport of skiing, your lack of respect for other people's health situations, religious beliefs and lifestyle choices is appalling. I can only hope that you reflect and course correct immediately as you're contributing mightily to a new social arrangement that will be anything but civil.

You deserve to go back in time and catch smallpox, measles, and polio at the same time. What's wrong with you? Why do you think people live so much longer and healthier lives these days? Oh, I forgot about tuberculosis, the nation's biggest killer just 70 years ago. Yeah, and I'll bet you're overweight and eat junk food, thinking that's ok, but heart disease and cancer will get you there, which are now the nation's biggest killers, BECAUSE WE ERADICATED MOST OF THE OTHER DISEASES, with, you know, science.

Go live on an island and stay away from the rest of us.

The hate in your heart is killing you. I will pray for you. Meanwhile, I will stay right where I'm at and you will learn to deal with it.

You do that, but first pray for yourself and your family and anybody you breath on in closed rooms, and get breathed on in those rooms. I'll be triple shot by noon tomorrow, and I feel great. Stay away from IKON resorts, OK?

You seem to infer that I'm not vaccinated? For the record, I don't disclose my status on personal medical details--and that's my point. Respect for privacy, personal space and basic human dignity has a far higher value than safety. The purported solution to get "back to normal" is a brand new technology, the long term results of which are unknown. Many have had bad reactions to the vaccines, even died. Therefore, vaccines are neither a panacea nor should they be mandated. These recent courses of action regarding "public health" are counter to the principles of the Enlightenment. Hence, my unfortunate yet necessary and choice words for both Mr. Winchester and yourself. You both need to remember the tradition from which you sprang, and I will go to any resort I please--deal with it.

"You both need to remember the tradition from which you sprang", what? Well, the tradition from where I sprang was a place where public health experts are respected and, well, fear of debilitating and fatal diseases, of course, and also respect for my community. So, we took vaccines, and, poof, no polio, a disease that killed and maimed millions. No smallpox, too, a disease you really never want to consider getting. It ravaged humanity for centuries, but vaccines killed it. Now I have to listen to selfish little people like yourself who are both suicidal and homicidal in your beliefs and actions. But, you know, have fun in your pathetic little world, because you'll have a really hard time leaving our borders, enjoying mass venues and restaraunts and cultural events here, and your career prospects have now extremely narrowed. Good luck there, buddy. I'm skiing in the Dolomites this winter, and you ain't.

Mike's avatar

I'm not your buddy, and if skiing in the Dolomites is worth your privacy, that's certainly your call. But insisting that the rest of us need to sacrifice our personal boundaries is NOT respecting anyone's community.

It's amazing how you extrapolate from one vaccine [Covid] to all others [smallpox, polio]. Those vaccines were never required to ski, or work at a resort and never should be. Every person is different, so their health protocols will vary; for some vaccines are the right choice, others choose differently because they may have allergies, for example. Apparently this is lost on you or you don't care, and then you have the audacity to call me selfish and pathetic...talk about projection.

Incidentally, there were a number of batches of the initial rounds of the polio vaccines that contained elements of SV-40, a viral fragment [I do believe] that was responsible for cancers years later. This is why choice and consent are paramount in making ANY health decision.

And the tradition I spoke of, to repeat myself, was the Enlightenment, where understandings of human rights and modern law were first developed...but I suppose that has gone out the window for you as well.

Enjoy your trip to Europe; just learn how to argue more intelligently while you're gone ;).

Concepts like self-ownership, free association and private contract are merely nuisances to be entirely disregarded by authoritarians who believe they carry a special mandate to force their will on those whom they can't persuade intellectually.

You apparently do not read much of the best research from epidemiologists from Harvard, Yale, the Cleveland Clinic, along with the English government Public Health to name just a few sources whose research supports the profound superiority of natural immunity. There are many reasons that those with natural immunity are choosing not to be vaccinated, in consultation with their doctors and in view of this research. Those with natural immunity are not spreading Covid19, but many of the vaccinated have shown to be at risk and pose a risk to others. Your contempt for others is on full display and unpersuasive.

For the record, I'm an employee of Vail Resorts who will be terminated rather than be coerced into a decision that my physician recommends against. I read most of the available research. I have natural immunity, which the latest scientific research points to as being 13 times more effective than the current vaccines. Let be honest, the vaccine mandates disregard natural immunity and what scientific research out of the best medical research institutions worldwide point to as a rational science-backed decision for many. The strongest push to require vaccination for all disregards the heath decisions and outcomes that are in the best interests of many individuals and are rooted in political science, not medical science. Those with natural immunity are not putting you at risk. Vail, Aspen, A-basin, etc al., are acting politically in this matter, as bullies to their employees and will be hard-pressed to staff their mountains this winter.

Natural immunity? Perhaps you should volunteer for testing at Pfizer or Moderna because I'm willing to bet they'd pay you a small fortune to learn about your superhuman ability to avoid COVID infection.

If by, 'natural immunity', you mean that you have had covid and carry antibodies, your "best research" must have also informed you that your immunity won't last forever. Funny though ... Your complete inability to see your own blatant contempt for the health and welfare of others is simply astounding.

I agree with you 1000%. Given that ski areas were among the most virulent epicenters of COVID outbreaks in Europe and the US, vaccine mandates should be instituted for workers and visitors alike. No exceptions.

Rather if you choose to be vaccinated or have natural immunity. Getting vaccinated is an American/Human decision and should never be forced on ANYONE. If you are vaccinated doesn’t mean you CANNOT contact the Covid-19 virus or be a carry and pass it to someone else. So please, people wake up and look at what’s really going on here.
