You do allude to this in your post: if you buy now and defer in December, then you pretty much have to buy their pass for 2021-2022 (in order not to lose the $800 credit), so if they raise the price to say $1000, you are stuck paying the difference. Not to mention the realistic possibility that if there is no 2020-2021 season, Alterra will be bankrupt by 2022. So yes, the option to defer is worth something, but less than what it seems at first glance.
