I know you're probably sick of people offering you unsolicited migraine advice, but please check out the podcast "Tell me about your pain" (based on the book The Way Out by Alan Gordon). It's focus is mostly neuroplastic chronic pain but chronic migraines often fall into this category and people just don't know it. It completely fixed a chronic pain problem that was all but ruining my life. I hope it helps!
Stuart, I’m glad you enjoy writing The Storm because I enjoy reading it - a beneficial symbiotic synergy. I’m interested what write about The National Ski Patrol - as a child I knew Tom Ludwig who I believe was one of the founders and held NSP #3. He was nothing but nice to this ski crazy kid. All the best, Dick
I love your writing, Stuart — big fan of the podcast too. I can relate to you on the migraines. I don’t get them often, maybe once a year, but when they hit, they’re absolutely paralyzing. When I was younger, my friends and family thought I was having a stroke after I told them half my body was numb. I later learned it was a specific type of migraine.
I also spend a lot of time on bikes in the warmer months. Here in the Midwest, we have some amazing gravel routes. I mix in a little cross-country trail riding, but most often I’m out cruising the neighborhood with my wife and dog. My gravel bike is a retro 1990s Bianchi mountain bike that I’ve converted into a modern drop-bar setup.
Nothing keeps me more in tune with the ski industry than your newsletter and podcast interviews. I really value your perspective — your questions have depth, skip the fluff, and get right to the heart of the personalities that shape the lift-served ski world.
Thanks for the insight into your daily routine, Stuart, and I'm sorry you suffer from migraines. I had a coworker who got those from time to time, and as a workaholic and senior employee, he'd power through them. I have no idea how he managed, from what I read about those cursed episodes you sufferers get.
The bike: I'm no expert, but I think Bianchi is a very old and very respected brand. I remember hearing about them in the 1980s with reverence. Cherish that thing. Don't hit a bus. Or vice-versa.
I think I've been following The Storm for almost five years now, I discovered it on Spotify in late 2020. It's been incredible watching how much The Storm has grown and evolved and improved over the years!
What a great post Stuart. It's nice to know a bit more about what makes you tick. My life does have some parallels. I am focused on skiing every day of the season followed by a lot of writing on UA summing up thoughts on current and upcoming conditions and weather at my favorite mountain.
When the lifts stop spinning, I turn to my bike as well. Being in Tahoe, I have the option of alternating my "townie" rides and my "perpetually green circle" mountain bike rides. Occasionally I take the time to write a deeper level piece on UA during the summer but it's nice to just let it go as I am not trying to make a living out of it.
I used to suffer from migraines as well but quitiring from both my teaching job and my summer job brought some serenity to my brain that makes for fewer migraines and Crohn's flareups. Hopefully you can get yourself to the same place.
For what it's worth, you are the only podcaster/journalist that I have chosen to support with a paid subscription, Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much, Mark, for this note and for your ongoing support of The Storm. You provide the best and most consistent window into Tahoe life, which is a much more sensible place to be a ski writer!
Happy to be along for the ride. So sorry about the migraines. I watched my mom suffer them for years: nothing to do but retreat to the bedroom with the blinds drawn, ice packs, and Darvon, for the better part of three days.
many thanks for your honest writing, stuart! always a pleasure to read your stuff, as a self-ID'd american lift-powered ski person. also bike guy in summer, dad, etc etc but without NYC and the migraines (hmm... can those two be somehow related?).
The storm's evolution has been noticed and appreciated. keep up the good work, looking fwd to what's next

What a lovely, genuine and enlightening piece, Stuart. I'm glad you have figured out the path that serves you (and us) best.

Unfortunately, the migraines followed me here from Michigan. Perhaps I can outrun them at elevation?
yeah maybe... do you get them while traveling as well?
Stuart - great stuff as always.
