Love Gore. One of the few spots that makes me miss riding the Ice Coast!

Thanks for this - I wish you guys had discussed the lift from the Ski Bowl to the Main Base Area crossing Burnt Ridge which is on the UMP.

Having this lift and the ability to download on it seems the only way to really tie the two together and make any slope side lodging at the Bowl truly marketable and dependable.

Not that I don’t love Gore as it is but it just seems weird to be making all the investments at the Bowl and talk about slope side lodging there, when it would still depend on Burnt Ridge, Eagle’s Nest, etc. being open.

Stuart, Again great edition and writing. My recollections of Gore begin at the old North Creek in the mid 1960’s but ended before the recent additions - including North Creek. I always enjoyed skiing Gore. I do recall a significant amount of side hill which is not my fav and complicates skiing in a crowd. I also appreciate steepness of Rumors - a lot steeper than Lies - from the chair I viewed many unfortunates accelerate as they slid the pitch on various aspects of their anatomy - skis not included. Fortunately there is no side hill so the slide path is down the trail, not into the woods. I do have a question, you seem to prefer Gore to Iceface, why? Whiteface is certainly colder and windier than Gore but I don’t recall it being more icy. All the best! Dick

My issue with Whiteface is basically a lack of glades. For a mountain that size, the network is under-developed IMO. I do like Whiteface, but I prefer Gore, which is also a lot easier to get to.

All valid points. When I lived in The Apple I recall the long drives well - and without fondness other than the opportunity to converse with your spouse unavailable during the week to a married couple of medical residents. My perusal of the forest surrounding White Face is how close the trees grow to each other - much closer than other spots in NY or VT. To make skiable glades would require major cutting which I imagine is not allowed in the ADK park.

At Whiteface it looks like a coalition of environmentalists, bird watchers and even some skiers are fighting the trail widening plans there for the World University Games. Any issues at Gore?

None that Bone raised in the pod. I didn't ask him about this explicitly though so there may be some things I'm unaware of.

Adirondack Explorer May/June is where I read it. Also has a nice article titled "A ski Mountain's Rebirth" about Hickory. Making Hickory 4 season like has happened at Bolton Valley should help.
